Surface area in km², natural lakes only (no reservoirs). The Caspian Sea is included because it is a lake by hydrological definition. Areas of shallow or saline lakes fluctuate by season and year. Lakes whose extent depends on the season or the decade are left out, though they would rank here when full: Lake Eyre North (8,144 km² at its mapped extent, dry most years), the shrunken Aral Sea (the South Aral about 7,300 km², the North Aral 3,300) and Lake Chad (about 1,540 km² today, 25,000 in the 1960s); the lakes pool lists them, with the fact that their area varies.
