On the map

Map of Counties of England, 48 counties: each one marked on the globe

The 48 ceremonial counties of England, the counties of the Lord-Lieutenants under the Lieutenancies Act 1997 (as amended): the shire counties with the unitary authorities inside them (Kent with Medway, Cheshire with Warrington and Halton), the six metropolitan counties, Greater London and the City of London, Bristol, and the Isle of Wight. They are the counties of today's maps, not the historic counties (Middlesex, Westmorland and Huntingdonshire are not among them) nor the councils that run local government, many of which are smaller. Area in km² is Wikidata's figure for each ceremonial county.
