Population of the city in millions, as Egypt's statistics agency CAPMAS counts it: its estimate for 1 July 2023, based on the 2017 census. Each place is an official city, not a metro area. Giza (Giza Governorate, across the Nile from Cairo) and Shubra El Kheima (Qalyubia Governorate, on Cairo's northern edge) are cities of their own in CAPMAS's count, so they rank separately from Cairo, as do Khusus, 6th of October City and New Cairo. All five lie in Greater Cairo, which as one metro area holds about 23 million.
