Capitals of first-level administrative units (states, provinces, regions): the capital Wikidata records for the unit (P36), else the seat GeoNames records for it (PPLA); a second, summer or winter capital is left out. A national capital is in only where it is also its unit’s seat (Canberra for the Australian Capital Territory, Brasília for the Federal District), not where the unit has another capital (Ottawa: Toronto; Amsterdam: Haarlem). The United States’ state capitals are those of its 50 states: the District of Columbia is not a state, so Washington, D.C. is not one of them. Population of the metro area: the city and the places continuously built up around it, as Thomas Brinkhoff’s Major Agglomerations of the World (citypopulation.de) counts them from censuses projected to 1 January 2026, the list most rankings use. It covers every agglomeration of 1 million or more; a smaller city ranks by its GHSL urban centre (2025), or by its city-proper figure where GHSL’s centre is far larger than the list allows. A city inside another city’s metro area (Giza in Cairo’s, Pretoria in Johannesburg’s) is not ranked on its own.
