New Zealand’s own list of its cities: the population of each urban area as Thomas Brinkhoff: City Population (citypopulation.de), from Stats NZ (subnational population estimates) counts it (New Zealand: Urban Areas (estimate, 2025-06-30), 30 June 2025), the way the country ranks its cities. A city that is not one of the list’s urban areas of 10,000 people or more is left out. Metro area, urban centre and city proper rank the same cities by the worldwide measures instead, so they compare across borders. One per group: the largest city of each region by this measure, then ranked together.
