Population of the metro area: the city and the places continuously built up around it, as Thomas Brinkhoff’s Major Agglomerations of the World (citypopulation.de) counts them from censuses projected to 1 January 2026, the list most rankings use. It covers every agglomeration of 1 million or more; a smaller city ranks by its GHSL urban centre (2025), or by its city-proper figure where GHSL’s centre is far larger than the list allows. A city inside another city’s metro area (Giza in Cairo’s, Pretoria in Johannesburg’s) is not ranked on its own. One per group: the largest city of each 10° band of latitude by this measure, then ranked together. Bands of latitude 10° wide, from the equator: 0°–10° N, 10°–20° N, … and 0°–10° S, … Sources: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0), GHSL UCDB R2024A (CC BY 4.0), Thomas Brinkhoff: Major Agglomerations of the World, citypopulation.de, Wikidata names (CC0).
