France’s own list of its cities: the population of each commune as INSEE counts it (Populations de référence 2023, population municipale of the communes, 1 January 2023), the way the country ranks its cities. A city that is not one of the list’s communes of 10,000 people or more is left out. Metro area, urban centre and city proper rank the same cities by the worldwide measures instead, so they compare across borders. One per group: the largest city of each region by this measure, then ranked together.
