Capitals of first-level administrative units (states, provinces, regions): the capital Wikidata records for the unit (P36), else the seat GeoNames records for it (PPLA); a second, summer or winter capital is left out. A national capital is in only where it is also its unit’s seat (Canberra for the Australian Capital Territory, Brasília for the Federal District), not where the unit has another capital (Ottawa: Toronto; Amsterdam: Haarlem). Croatia’s own list of its cities: the population of each city as Thomas Brinkhoff: City Population (citypopulation.de), from DZS (Croatian Bureau of Statistics), census counts it (Croatia: Cities & Settlements (census, 2021-08-31), 31 August 2021), the way the country ranks its cities. A city that is not one of the list’s cities of 10,000 people or more is left out. Metro area, urban centre and city proper rank the same cities by the worldwide measures instead, so they compare across borders. Sources: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0), Thomas Brinkhoff: City Population, citypopulation.de, after DZS (Croatian Bureau of Statistics), census, 2021-08-31 (CC BY 3.0), Wikidata names and capitals (CC0).
