How the figures are measured
How well known each wine region is: the number of Wikipedia language editions with an article on it (Wikidata sitelinks). Wine regions rank by fame because the area of many is not known; rank by area for the largest. A wine region is a legally defined appellation: the land within which a wine must be grown to carry the name. Every wine PDO registered in the European Union (DOCG and DOC in Italy, AOC in France, DO and DOCa in Spain, DOC in Portugal…), outlined from the municipalities each one’s specification lists, and the American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) of the United States. An appellation drawn on the very same land as another is one row under its best known name. The small appellations lie inside the large; a quiz can be of the ones inside one (“appellations of Bordeaux”). Countries are those the outline lies in.
