Population of the metro area: the city and the places continuously built up around it, as Thomas Brinkhoff’s Major Agglomerations of the World (citypopulation.de) counts them from censuses projected to 1 January 2026, the list most rankings use. It covers every agglomeration of 1 million or more; a smaller city ranks by its GHSL urban centre (2025), or by its city-proper figure where GHSL’s centre is far larger than the list allows. A city inside another city’s metro area (Giza in Cairo’s, Pretoria in Johannesburg’s) is not ranked on its own. Spoken: official there, or spoken by 10% or more (CLDR for countries; for a city or region its own breakdown from Wikipedia or Wikidata where there is one, else its country’s).
