Area in km², measured on the outline (Natural Earth 1:10m disputed areas and breakaway units, its countries for Kosovo, Taiwan and Palestine, the regions and dependencies pools for autonomous regions and the occupied oblasts, Natural Earth admin-1 units for Ceuta, Melilla and Republika Srpska, and its Antarctica cut along the meridians of each Antarctic claim). Wording is neutral: who governs a place, who claims it, and how many UN members recognise it. Places whose status is contested or apart: de facto states, partially recognised states, territories of unresolved status, areas one state administers or occupies and another claims, the self-governing autonomous regions of states (Catalonia, Greenland, Tibet, the Kurdistan Region) and regions with an independence movement and no autonomy (Cabinda, Casamance). Recognition counts are approximate and dated; countries are the de jure ones of the Countries set. Former breakaway states (Artsakh, Biafra, Katanga) and the Antarctic claims (the British Antarctic Territory, the Ross Dependency) are in only when asked for. A place lying inside another of the same quiz is left out and the whole asked: the Free Zone with Western Sahara, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with Palestine, Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract with Xinjiang; a quiz without the whole asks the part (Disputed territories asks the West Bank and Aksai Chin).
